A unique Combination of Japanese Silk and Alpaca

EXODOS Copenhagen Makeup Bag and Clutch Collection consist of unique handcrafted clutches and makeup bags made from premium 100% Peruvian Alpaca yarn and original Japanese Nishijin kimono silk brocade, woven in Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan famous for its textile tradition.

But why this combination of Japanese silk and Alpaca fiber?

Having lived and worked in Japan close to 20 years, we have a profound understanding of the ancient Japanese culture that has left us with a lasting impression and we decided to introduce one aspect of this fascinating culture to the West - the beautiful silk fabric Nishijin used for the Japanese kimono belt obi - and make use of it in a way that Westerners could also benefit.

The Allure and History of Nishijin Weaving

We wanted to combine the Japanese silk with an eco-friendly fiber and decided on alpaca fiber.
Alpacas living in the Andes are considered to be some of the 'greenest' animals on earth since efficient eating habits result in greatly reduced water needs relative to other grazing animals.

They are also eco-friendly since they can produce fleece throughout their life without being harmed. Because alpacas are is naturally free of lanolin and other oils found in a sheep’s wool, no harsh chemicals are needed to process alpaca fiber, making alpaca ranching 100% natural and safe for the environment.

Alpaca is a soft, durable, luxurious and silky natural fiber without lanolin which makes it hypoallergenic. It is naturally water-repellent and difficult to ignite. The nature of the fiber reduces static electricity, which attracts dust and soil grease and oil do not spot alpaca as easily as they do other fibers.

The design of the bags is inspired by the simple and timeless elegance of Danish and Japanese design and the bags are entirely handmade in Cyprus by skilled craftswomen from Cyprus and Ukraine who have a long and proud family tradition of sewing, knitting, and crocheting.

EXODOS Copenhagen is hereby helping these women to obtain an additional income while keeping their traditions alive.

The end result is beautiful and absolutely unique!
